My biggest point of contention is that he called it a rip-off. We all knew exactly what we were getting, Rare told exactly what to expect in the final live stream before release. I get it if people are disappointed, but going as far as to say it's a rip-off or scam is a bit baffling to me.
Just watched the Angry Joe review.
@ducky12497 The lowest review I had seen (from actual critics) before now was a 6 (5 on my scale means mediocre, so just above that). He gave it a 4 and compared it to the center of No Man's Skys galaxy. What? How are they similar at all, one was a deception, the other was just a large misunderstanding.
Rare did hype this game to the sky. As well as gamers! And in it's current state it is a rip-off imo. In it current shape the game should not cost more than 30 Euros. No more! I think that most critics would have gone easy on the game if it did not taxed FULL PRICE AAA style. Because this game cannot even compare in this form with other AAA! It has great potential. I think that Rare can make it work. But they need to rush content asap before the player base dies out.
To be frank. I felt a bit mislead by Rare. I watched all the news around this game. And the developers said some really over the top things. But this kind of marketing is sadly common nowadays in the gaming industry.
Not everyone is watching live streams. I have played since the alpha and I pretty much knew it was going to be a shallow game based on that. However I did have my hopes high but I am already bored of it.
You do the same thing over and over again. Sword mechanics is bad, there is no skill to it. World is empty, AI is bad etc.
The best things about the game is the water and sailing. The ability to play with friends via cross-play too but that is it really.
Very, very disapointed. I will probably start playing often in a few months again when they have added a bunch of things.

I haven't watched his video, but they are both pretty empty games with not much going on. Look at Perfect Dark N64 that game had an a*s load of content, still more than modern games. SAD!!!
these fanboys who paid 60 dollars for this game and cant get a refund are now trying to defend this game because they want to believe that every dollar they paid for this game was worth it but deep inside their heart they know they are screwed haha. everything what joe said about this game was right. he even quoted some speeches of rare developers during live gaming events where a rare developer says: "this is by far the most ambitious game rare has ever created" and look what kind of boring rip off game you got haha. so yet this game did got over hyped by the fanboys who said the beta is only maybe 30% of the game and by the developers too. so go cry in a corner.
@hahaha-lol-l**o i defend the game because i believe that yes it is worth $60 heres why
You really believe the 3d character artists, design, texture artist, the guys who do all the animation and rigging, environment artist, the guys doing all of the coding, you really believe they shouldnt be paid $60 for the amount for work and skill they put into the game to make it look so good?
id like you see you do better

People don't listen or read.
We know what the game would be at launch since mid-february.
But they speculate. They expect. Then they rage. Sad.
I was disappointed to see that the game had no NPC ships in the game. I mean it has pve stuff on islands but nada on the sea. I would have loved to fight and plunder NPC skeleton crews in their ships on the sea. But nah... sure we have pvp but I suck at it. So I had hoped for more pve stuff like NPC ships. Would bring more life to the game also. But that is just my opinion ofc.
@moogle-mogg your logic is flawed. Most of the people who paid $60 are asking a refund right now because they cannot accept that this game feels so empty and not finished for AAA full price. If it were $30 people would have less expectations and thus will not ask for refunds and look forward to support the game by encouraging the team and supporting it by buying dlc and merch. I mean the price of this game is it's biggest flaw by far. Sometimes less is more in the long run!
@firetadpole7469
Yeah, it kinda sounded like he was bit more hyped than others. And for someone who may not have been following the production as closely, I can see how they'd feel disappointed.
Plus, getting super worked up over stuff is part of his shtick. It's part of what makes his videos fun to watch. (For me anyway.)
The No Man's Sky comparison is a reach, but NMS is a buzzword at the moment so people are gonna use it whether accurate or not. Heck, more than once I've seen people compare the upcoming microtransactions to Star Wars: Battlegrounds 2 and it's loot boxes. Which is silly, but it's a recent hot topic, so people are gonna use it.
Overall, Joe's review is pretty accurate. Whether or not you judge the facts as harshly as him comes down to personal opinion.
@simply-nephalem how can my own logic be flawed when that's the exact reason i bought this game?... to actually pay the guys for doing such amazing work in creating a really good looking game....the F K? i think your logic is flawed
Then its your guys fault have setting your expectations too high, don't go try push that blame onto others just because your too ashamed to admit that you didn't realistically keep your expectations in check
@moogle-mogg you are one. Cuz you are satisfied with the content. But many are not. Thus, they will request a refund ending up in Rare lose money. It is too expensive for the little content it provides. Many people will get annoyed from that and spread out the word that this game is not worth it. And after time when this game becomes good (if ever) it will still have a bad reputation like NMS. You will see soon what I am talking about. I hope that I am not right.
I paid £50 for an experience I can't get anywhere else - for me, that is two rounds of drinks with 4 mates down the pub in one evening - I've met more new mates playing this game, building rapour, and having moments of intensity and serenity than anyone else - don't tell me I should expect more from it - how many hours are people playing for and how many dollars or pounds are they paying? How much do people shovel away to Warner Brothers on bad movies but don't ask them for a refund?
I ain't missing the point - I am making my point and you can't steal that away from me.
I havent watched Joes review of it yet, but I can see why him and so many others feel let down. Me personally, I feel like the game is Average. Its not a $60 game, I feel like the PUBG $30 price point is what this game falls into. I see a lot of similarities between aspects of SoT, PUBG, The Division and Destiny 2.
PUBG shares its unfinished, and each game is a new story type of gameplay
The Division Shares its Dark Zone style of gameplay by not knowing if the next ship is going to try and kill you or befriend you
Destiny 2 shares its MMO Lite style with the game
The big difference is that SoT needs to do a much better job listening to its players than Bungie did with Destiny 2, and they need to work faster than Bluehole does fixing PUBG. Hell SoT could even end up being more of a platform type game like Overwatch is. Rare needs to get these things fixed and start adding more reasons for people to play before this game gets to Destiny 2's level, with players jumping off so fast. Thats what happened to me. Destiny 2 was my most played game on Xbox One last year, and it came out in September, and I havent touched that game since November. I just hope that same thing doesnt happen with Sea of Thieves

For me this was worth the price of the game alone, the way they have done the sea has never been done before to this standard, it's next generation and has set a new benchmark in gaming.

I believed this until someone posted some videos of an early promotional speech for the game. I think it may have been in the angry joe review someone posted on here.
Whilst the speech does not include any legally binding suggestions and statements, it does involve many suggestions and statements that strongly suggest a game unlike the one we have been sold.
Ultimately as long as a refund is offered within a reasonable time period after purchase, no one can call it a rip-off. But there has definately been some degree of dis-clarity. I don't think 'Rare told exactly what to expect' is an accurate statement. They were distinctly vague and evasive about alot of aspects of the game when questioned and when making statements.
Statements such as 'giving you unlimited freedom', one I heard on the angry joe review from the guy who apparently works at Rare and seems to be heading the game's marketing. The game is actually very far from giving you unlimited freedom in any regard. You're actually fairly limited in what you can choose to do and not do.
Most people DO NOT watch live streams from the developers.
Most people buy the game after they see the ads. Or read the Microsoft Store description:
"From acclaimed developer Rare comes a shared-world adventure game that offers the ultimate pirate experience.
Packed to the seams with sailing and exploring, fighting and plundering, riddle solving and treasure hunting, Sea of Thieves has everything you need to live the pirate life you’ve always dreamed about."
I would consider this description misleading.
@inbred-chimera Well, if it was early promotional speech, then I would expect it to be different than the actual product 2 years down the line. I will agree that when they dodged questions and were generally secretive it was a bit misleading.
@Thygrrr Then that's on the consumer. You should always find more to base a purchase on than just the game description, which for a lot of games aren't very accurate to how the majority will perceive the game.
@StephenFarren why is it terrible in your opinion? I really like Joe since he has supported the gaming community since years. He wanted this game to succeed as much as all of us did. You can see his disappointment in the review. I felt that the review was missing some good ideas how to fix the problems depicted. But it covers almost all of the major flaws of the game. I don't see how you can disagree with that.
@simply-nephalem because he stated that it is like no mans sky. Everything is in the game that Rare promised us!
I've been following the game for only maybe two months before its release, I haven't watched a single livestream or anything that announced what will be in the game.
So I had literaly no expectations about the game, in my first beta, I only played a few hours and it was really fun and exciting. On the second (last) beta, I played from the first hour to almost the last day, and I got bored really quickly.
So now I've been playing quite a lot to try to get to that end game that YOU people defending the game say that it's worth it and all. But in the meanwhile, I'm only jumping from server to server in order to get a Fortress because it's the only thing fun in the game. It brings PvP and PvE and the ONLY challenge and even if no one comes, it's easy to complete.
But now when I see people defending that game that is so shallow and say that it's worth 70 euros, have you ever played a real game before ? Either you just have a c**p ton of money so you don't care and that's good for you. Or it's your first game ever and you've missed out a lot. But good for you anyway if you manage to find that much joy in this game.
But be a bit realistic and objective about the price compared to the content. Farcry 5 is less expensive than that, State of Decay 2 will be twice as cheap as this game. If you put 10 euros for each thing to do in this game, it wouldn't even be worth 70 dollars.
