  • @codename1337 the zigzag pattern where the bow passes through the eye of the wind is called tacking in English ^.^

Port tack and strb tack :p
    Amazing tutorial.

Maybe combat will be more of a challenge for people with lots of sailing experience now ^.^

  • @toastywrath
Thanks a lot for the corrections! My English Technique Terms are not very good. ^^

  • @codename1337 would you be able to make a shipboard combat tutorial? I would do it myself but you articulated your tips so well I don’t think I could do better ^.^

I’ve noticed most crews out there struggle with wind compensation when firing. As well as the pros and cons of leeward vs windward firing positions ^.^

If more people know how to position themselves better there would be far less complaints about the sloop being at a disadvantage :)

  • @toastywrath
Sure, I'll be glad to work on it!

  • @codename1337 So when the wind is hitting at the front of your sails (the opposite side of them) do you need to put the sails up so it doesnt push against you? or can you have them down, even if it is pushing against you.

also if you need to turn heavily to the right while docking, should I still put the wheel at 20 degrees / lower, or should I then turn my wheel a few more degrees.

thank you for this awesome post though. learned a lot on ships

  • @codename1337 I disagree with the docking suggestion of "anchor drop time" as you can dock without having the need to use it at all.

  • @salazar-armando
In real life it does slows you down, in SoT, I'm not sure yet.
Heavy turn is always a heavy turn, keep in mind the wheel takes some time to spin to oposite side, so after you put it all to one side, it will take some time to respond all the way to the other! (No Turn back m8)!

  • @salazar-armando The wind should never be pushing back against your sails. The point of the concepts he mentioned are to keep you from stopping dead in the water by working around the wind.

    However. To answer your question.
In real life having the wind hit the front of your sails directly isn’t advantageous at all. And would probably stop you.
In this game it’s better to leave them down as you’ll continue to move regardless of wind direction. Where as if you pull them up. You’ll stop.

  • @shadowstrider-7
You can play without using the anchor at all! ^^
It exists, it's your call to use it or not. After getting your sails up, its your decision if you drop your anchor or not, its defennetly better to tottaly stop your ship. (When Porting).
I'll edit the post and put a (Optional) on the drop anchor. ^^

  • To expand on my last comment the sails each have their own set percentage of speed.

Forward sail being 25% the middle 50% and the aft 25%. Now depending on how you position them in the wind will determine how any combination of the three will affect your speed. But leaving all three down will always make you go faster than pulling any of them up regardless of wind position.

In addition. The sails do not affect turn speed. You will always turn at the same speed for each degree of turn. Pulling your sails up will only affect your forward movement thus making your turn tighter. But again regardless of what combination of sails you have down you will not turn “faster” but instead tighter due to slower forward movement speed.

This is not true for real life. Just the game. If you feel inspired and plan to sail in real life please do separate research on that lol.

  • @toastywrath
Combat help* is there! Freshly made! ^^ Cheers M8!

  • @codename1337 Sweet. I’m actually very experienced in sail ship based combat as I do frequent reenactments and races ^.^ also have been sailing a refurbished schooner for a few years. If you’d like me to expand or add to anything let me know ^.^ always happy to help

  • @toastywrath
Let me know if you have any ideas! Always happy to edit it!

No need to edit. Post was fine. Just throwing in my two-cents.

  • Wow!

Thank you very much for this informations :)

  • I have done a bit of sailing, had a boat, lost a boat... and always heard the left referred to as Portside..
    StarBoard and PortSide.

Just thought i would mention it

  • @CodeName1337 @ToastyWrath
Great info! Although I’ve never sailed before, I consider myself a nautical nerd, and would be honored and privileged if either of you would join my club, Three Sheets to the Wind. Alternatively, if you have a club, I’d like to join. Even though it’s just a game, I feel real life seamanship can go a long way. Cheers!

  • @astraldruid

I actually think it is like that to, but someone corrected me, so I edited^^ Idk what to put now hahaha!

  • @codename1337 no it’s just port and starboard lol.

Either port side. Or starboard side. The side is extra

Port is left. And starboard is right lol

  • @toastywrath In Portuguese is quite simple xD

  • @y0ujerk it does. There’s a reason my crew and I have sunk over 30 ships in one weekend and only been sunk twice. Due mainly to poor resource management XD lol

  • @codename1337 it is in English as well some people just over complicate it.
