More ship customization, not just cosmetics

  • I love the game and the work you did so far.
I heard there will be cosmetics for the ships. I think that isn't enough of customization and think it would be cool if you implement other customization.
Not just more health or stats boost (better of without) but something you can change that gives you an advantage in some way and a disadvantage in another way. That way you can keep things balanced for new players but add more stuff for people to work for.

Ex: A morter that can shoot further but less cannons (or sails).

Let me know what you think about that idea.

  • Giving Stats and boosts is something Rare have said they do not want in this game, This is so that the game is not run by how much you spend or the luck of finding certain items, or your Galleon being 1 shot hit by a sloop and losing half the ship. Instead they are trying to make the game experience based more around skill and personal abilities.

  • Yea Rare wants the game to be skill based only. So when a new person logs on they don't have to worry about another ship they see as it is the same as theirs minus cosmetics of course.

  • I think there is a way you can accomplish both. All galleons, for example, could have a set number of modification slots which start out in the existing "pre-equipped" configuration.

As you gain resources maybe you could add better sails to go faster but in order to so you must sacrifice hull integrity or a pair of cannons. Similarly, maybe you can add additional cannons, but everytime you do you have to lose something. a level of speed or maneuverability.

It would take some time to balance, but in essence all ships would be all the same "level" but could have different strengths and weaknesses.

  • I would suggest one point that would maybe allow further customization and strategy.
Have different positions for canons without increasing the number of canons.
    Sloop:
Let's say it takes 30 seconds to raise the sails alone. How about having a 60/80 seconds interaction to move the canons on predesignated slots.
Let's have 2 on each side and 1 facing the front.

    Galleon:
Same as Sloop, but 2 in front.

Just a contribution to the thread not asking for this.

  • @mcduckgtr the problem with this is that you'll create a meta and metas aren't good for balance!

  • Yep, sidegrading would be neat and would add more variety to the game and different playstyles.
For instance, a reinforced bow to ram more efficiently but slowing the max speed of the ship.
Or different types of rudder, with better turning radius, but making the wheel more slow to turn, or vice versa.
    Etc.

  • They still should give us something to work for, i mean just to look better isnt really fun. Upgrading something would be nice, doesnt need to be the ship.

Almost every PVP game has a meta, even very competitive games, from MMOs, to RTS, MOBAS and even FPS, it's not that big of a deal.

  • At this level of ignoring what the devs want, this thread like most will turn into (Mod Edited) posting. People just barf their ideas without even taking into account what the game is :p

  • @aenima123 So the beta was PVP, what's the meta then ?

MOBAS: League has issues with balance, so much that it is taking up all of their time, same goes for competitors. NOT BALANCED
MMOs: World of W, and others which have a pvp aspect to them usually have a class or a combination of classes that beat any other comp when played at the same level. NOT BALANCED
RTS: Some races are far better than others, take SC2. NOT BALANCED.
FPS: don't even get me started on the weapons choice xD look at OW which claimed to be only skilled based. Meta changes every other month. NOT BALANCED.

We know what Rare have in mind : A game where anyone can join their friends, even if they are just starting and their friends have 50hours+.
    Sidegrading wouldn't change that.

  • @ryuuzakki

You obviously haven't played the game jet.

  • You should have the option to have more cannons and maybe even some sort of grappling hook to dock onto rival ships.

Yeah just played it for like 50 hours, but ok,

I mean, could you buy anything but Weapons? not really.
I just saw some Weapons, and the rest are just skins for your weapons and stuff

  • I would understand if the alterations around a ship were placement of the items on board the ship, As these may not give advantages, And advantages in battles is something that reduces how fair the game is.
Giving people the ability to make their ship better/more powerful than others tends to put others off, It causes one player to end with all the "Cool Gadgets" that make them strong and then other players that just can't quite cut a break and may as well own a row boat in a world of battle ships.

There will become "Best Builds" which takes the fun out of "Here's my ship! And look how I painted the sails" and makes it "Here's my ship, She can destroy a Galleon... While flying at a 90° angle singing God save the queen".

I don't know about you, I love god save the queen, But I'm not wanting to dive into the game after taking a week off due to a family holiday and finding some player has maxed out their stats and become so powerful that no Naval Army can even scratch their ship. I want to sail with my crew in a Galleon and say "Holy mother and Mary! That sloop almost sunk us, And he's solo, That scurvy dog is a legend!"

TL;DR - Needless to say, I want to be able to have a 1 Vs 1 battle with another pirate, And not worry if my bullseye aim is going to beat their potato aim because they have special attributes.

  • @ryuuzakki so you played 50 hours without understanding the point of the game then. REPUTATION is all that matter.
When you sea a player arriving with only what pirates legends can wear, you'll be sure to turn the other way for he has obviously worked hard to reach this point!
What YOU want is to gain strength by farming the game, that is not skilled based. It's farm base.
Maybe this game is not for you if you still fail to see the vision after 50+ hours.

  • @its-s****. I am aware of that and support that stance. I am trying to say customization in a way that keeps things balanced. Something that gives you an advantage and a disadvantage. Not mmo style.

    "REPUTATION" ? poor guy xdd

who u wanna show your "REPUTATION" no one gonna see it. Seems like you didnt understand the game

  • @ryuuzakki so becoming a pirate legend is what ?
cause up until now that's what the aim is, and we know this wont make you better or stronger.

Pirate Legend, dude watch less movies

Nobody gonna see your name or anything else, it doesnt matter how good you play lol

  • @ryuuzakki Well, thanks for the trollz, have a good day my good fellow.

I see where you're going, but the whole Advantage/Disadvantage thing trumps the whole Equality thing...

Removing things to increase other things can make your ship more powerful, making things unfair and unbalancing the whole system...

see ya, keep dreaming that anyone gonna see your "REPUTATION" and then keep calling other people troll xD

You should go back probably to League of Legends, we arent playing ranked LUL

  • @ryuuzakki Technically Sea of Thieves is based around your reputation as a Pirate, Working your way up to become a pirate legend.

The higher your in-game reputation, the higher your missions/quests payouts and the more difficult they become.

  • @its-stoobs you can balance that. Not huge things. More like little changes to your ship.

  • I'm not into micromanaging buffs/debuffs, and min-maxing ship parts to try to have some cutting edge ship.

Cosmetic, as usual, is more than fine.

  • @ryuuzakki The progression is cosmetic; meaning it is showing what you have achieved throughout your items skins and titles. If this is not reputation then what is it ? please do try and answer with constructive points if you don't want to be called a troll. For what you are currently doing is trolling.

I think he did mean, that his name gonna show up on a list, like he is top 1 or whatever

They have added many players to a list that gets them into Easter eggs in the game.

  • @Ryuuzakki waiting for apologies my good fellow. But I'll understand that pirates are proud lads whithout regards for others YARRR!

EDIT: sorry Its Stoobs I know you are trying to help xD

well if that is the meaning of "REPUTATION" then its not gonna take long to get every skin and the highest "REPUTATION" in less than 1 week. After that we wont have anything to work for, no upgrades nothing. That is what i meant. If there would be a ranked list, or something like that it would be more fun. I think you just dont get my point

  • @ryuuzakki No point arguing with you land lover (i.e. you infer too much and are prejudiced). I bid you a good day.

  • @ryuuzakki There is a list of Pirates/Community Members who have left their mark in different ways, the full list is --HERE-- Have a read. ;)
