We need more variety

  • @cheatingpirate more isn't always better. Case and point, I stopped reading your long-a*s post after the first paragraph.

  • @angel-rugal said in We need more variety:

@cheatingpirate that's another thing, Kraken has not been confirmed, it just appeared in an artwork a lot of time ago, that's it

if the game releases and there's no kraken Rare can say "hey, we didnt say there was going to by any kraken, no idea where you got that from"

I'll try to dig up where I saw it, but I could have sworn I saw a comment from Rare stating everything in the 2016 E3 Cinematic trailer was planned, which would include the Kraken.

  • @void-presence well, the main argument against this is that the weapons we've been shown already have different stats, in a functional since. Meaning the Blunderbuss is always going to do more damage up close. The Sniper is always going to be more effective at long range. I believe the OP is simply suggesting more of this, which I think it fair to ask for since Rare has already said that what they've shown us is the core mechanics and game loop, and they will expand on that toward release. What that means could be really anything, but more diverse weapons and gear are certainly a commonly asked for thing from the community.

Just because there aren't stats visible, doesn't mean they don't exist.

  • @labarge28 i dont remember anyone saying that, it would be really useful if you can find it whenever you have the time

  • @angel-rugal I'm digging around when I get chances. I keep finding other people saying things like "they've said they'll be in game," but finding the original source is proving a bit harder.

  • @angel-rugal Here's an older article that references Rare's statement, for example. Best I've been able to find for now:

"Rare promises that the game will offer an "emergent experience with limitless adventures" with players able to explore rich worlds and fight fantastic creatures such as a kraken. "

  • @labarge28 i watched everything and am pretty confident that the kraken was just a concept artwork from almost 3 years ago, there's also a wall painting in one ingame island that looks like big tentacles coming from the sea to grab a ship, but that's it, no confirmation of any kind

  • @angel-rugal between the 2015 E3 trailer:
    @1:03

    And the 2016 E3 trailer:
    @1:25

    And the E3 2017 trailer:
    @4:43

It will be pretty hard for Rare to explain why the Kraken isn't in the game if it is indeed not there lol. But knowing Rare's M.O, this kind of marketing is common with them. Remember when they were throwing hints about the merchants guild and stuff? But technically you're not wrong, its not really confirmed :).

  • @angel-rugal I think it's a little more than just that. Another article interviewing Rare where they mention the Kraken as an in-game creature (both on the 2nd page).

"Oh, yes. In the course of the presentation, Chapman mentions (ahem):
Character clothing made out of vanquished enemies (for instance, a Kraken tooth hat)"

as well as "Chapman’s examples are “Krakens and pirate skeletons, skeletal lords, sea serpents [and] pirate ghosts.”"

Chapman in these quotes is the Lead Designer Mike Chapman. The article's a bit dated (2016), but unless things have changed drastically, they were certainly planning on a Kraken.

  • @labarge28 alright, kraken confirmed then? that's great news!

now for the second question, will any of those things be available on release? i mean they did say "there's a roadmap after release", which basically means the game will release with minimum content and add more through patches along the months after release

what will be available on release?

  • @labarge28 good god there is a lot in the article. The thing is Rare has hinted at all these things for years, but not really shown or engaged the community about them. So a lot of the things in there are kind of left in question in my mind. Except the Karken stuff, since we actually have official hints of it in videos and stuff.

  • I would love as much variety as they can pack in, without advantages. Different gun/sword appearance, yes. Different gun/sword function, no. I'd love to see a lot of customization to ship appearance, but no way to build a "better" ship.
There will still be a way to be a better pirate, but it will be through being a more efficient crew where everyone knows how to run the ship and maneuver, everyone checks and adjusts sails and gets on repairs quickly.

  • I agree with you, and if this game is successful I have a feeling we'll have all of this and more. Microsoft platforms really needs a successful game, and this may be just the game to do it!

  • @sandman929 Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't there already functionally better weapons and gear in the game? I mean the Blunderbuss is said to be a killer up close, the Sniper is defiantly better at longer range, and the pistol is a good middle of the road ranged weapon. So I think if they expanded on those things then I don't see any harm in it. Sure, no stats or advantages, but functionally some weapons will be better than others situationally. You might find a Rapier that only thrusts instead of swings like the Cutlass. It doesn't really make it better or worse, just functionally different.

As for ships, I think you could do different hull and sail designs without making them better or worse than the base ones, just make them look different. Again, there could be some functional advantages, but no real stat advantages. Same way we see weapons and other games now in the game basically.

  • @ethnine Probably, the closed beta will be my first chance to actually play and I'm still playing catch-up when it comes to what's in the game. Naval battles seem to the be the heart of the PvP experience, so I wouldn't want to see any steps taken to make this into a fighter or MMO with players leveling up or unlocking any kind of more power skills. Again, not having played yet, it seems that the mechanics are already in place to give an advantage in a naval battle based on how well the crew runs the ship.
It doesn't seem like the Dev team is interested in creating unbalance and I'm just hoping it stays that way. Playing ESO, while fun, is an exercise in constant imbalance.

  • @sandman929 I don't think there's anything to worry about there. But if I am really good at knives and you're somewhat new to the Cutlass, there's certainly an advantage there. I also hope to see things like glowing swords and guns that give you slight edges in the PVE aspect of the game. Even though PVP is part of it, its not the only part.

  • @stephen321 For the swords, I have seen different kinds of swords and hoping they aren't gonna have the same move set. The ships can easily be modified and not do anything bad. And they promised more enemies.

  • @ethnine That actually is worded much better than I have worded it. Basically variety in the functions and models of each weapon and ship

  • @ethnine good sources and the videos were great to watcho7(that is a salute)

  • I am all for variety, it gives me something to hunt for. However, as I have stated many times before in other threads, adding stat-oriented items will create a problem.

I am not saying that Rare would not do their best to make sure these items are balanced in relation to their strengths and weaknesses, but nearly every time items are introduced with stats it leads to BiS gear setups.

There are plenty of games out there that have this BiS system and I hope that SoT does not turn into one of them.

I am hoping SoT is the game I can log into with my buds, do some PvE treasure hunting, and occasionally running into some PvP mischief.

Have the different melee, ranged, and ship items, just make them skins. I personally would have no problem with that.

  • @avirex-idyll Actually I screwed up. I mean have all of these things function differently. Which still keeps the game balanced.

  • @avirex-idyll there's already stats in the game via a items functionality. You just don't see it. Which is fair if you ask me personally, and all items are accessible to all players. Not that they won't be hard to achieve or find, but they are out there.

  • I hope that they have a solid game with solid story quest. I expect the characters that we make have some sort of background story that leads you to steal/ run away from a prison/ slave ship and become a pirate (Instead of just throwing you out into the sea with a ship that pops up). After that you can create whatever legend you want but I just don't want the game to be a ("Sandbox). I hope the quest give you some sub stories. Main story quest would be enjoyed, but at this point I'm good with puzzle/ mini game implementation in find the treasure quests and a background story.

  • Interesting. I actually think if they skimp out on quests that would make the game stale. I think all the stuff you listed would be nice though, it's cool to have a fancy weapon or to see some different AI's. I'm actually hoping the game ends up with a few MMO-like bosses with epic loot. (I honestly don't know I haven't encountered any yet)

  • @ethnine That is fine to a degree as I am assuming you are referring to items such as the flintlock and the blunderbuss as examples, one is good at mid range, the other at close, where they offset is their effective ranges.

I am ok with this to a very limited degree. The way I see it is if your doing it paper-rock-scissors style, that is fine, but once you start adding in additional layers such as, for example, sails, hauls, cannons, and other such items that effect performance of the ships, there will eventually emerge a BiS.

@CheatingPirate I understood what you meant, apologies if I was misleading. Even if these items function differently, balancing them will be extremely difficult, which leads back to my BiS statement.

  • I see this keeps coming round in the same circle which i think is either a lack of understanding or just miscommunication.
    Let me explain for clarity.

Currently we have the sloop and gallion, pistol and blunderbuss and we know the rifle is coming soon. With this we know that the blunderbuss is more powerful than the pistol and the gallion is more powerful than the sloop thus there already exists a power variation.

As the blunderbuss is a vision of power as is the gallion and the pistol is a small arm a simple all-rounder similar to the sloop. The rifle then is a long range weapon so is there the potential for a ship with better mobility?

My point is that there is a power triangle in place with weapons currently it makes sense that this principle would be equally ported to ships.

Again I'm not fronting the idea of an OP ship that's better at everything but pivoting a ships function to be slightly better in a set area but weaker in another.

  • @cheatingpirate You are correct variety helps keep a game fresh. I too would like to see some more stuff added when I launch up the beta and the full game. Rare is working on ways to keep new items added to the game without making it unfair for a newer player to obtain.

  • @red0demon0 I am thinking that most likely they'd have npc story quests, which eventually lead to huge conclusions. like in Monster Hunter.

  • @cheatingpirate ya make some good points

  • @killingcurse1 Well thank you. anything you wanna add?

  • @cheatingpirate Ill look soon, busy at the moment... Chat to me; remind me just so I dont forget if you will.

  • I think they should do the ship custimization kinda like Rocket League in a sense. There are a bunch of different designs to make your vehicle unique, but it doesn't affect gameplay. The same could be done with the ships to give everybody the chance to make theirs unique without offsetting the balance.

  • I want to play some darts or gamblegames during the trips to other islands with my M80s

  • @chilmus Yeah, they should add some kind of way to pass the time while sailing. Those seem like a good idea.

  • @ethnine Do not compare this with No Man's Sky. Sure, they are holding back a lot of information for the Beta, and even more for the full release, but NMS didn't give us any information, or let us play it beforehand. Also, Phil Spencer is putting a lot of faith in Rare, so they CANNOT mess up.
