Art Director: Indigenous life & a Pirate Island - Giant Monster bones - Theory.

    1. alt text Possibly some sort of giant bird enemy or kraken (thats a big a*s beak) but i also have other ideas what this might be through my own play session. Just tossing the idea out there might of been more then one kraken.

    2. Thieves haven - he said "they live there and have explored in there" so possibly NPC pirates? they said no "pirate" player on the "sea" will be a player so perhaps there is some sort of other pirates in this game ..I mean there is already some but their skeletons.

    3. Perhaps we will see indigenous people we can make trade deals with? I wonder if they will be always aggressive towards pirates or if you could sway them with goods. I remember the story of captain Cook in hawaii and I guess they captured his men and ate them alive?

    4. Worshipping "Crab" Island "snake" island possibly an ERA of "Sea of monsters"

    5. "THE GOLDEN AGE OF PIRACY HAS STILL YET TO COME" that one kind of confused me since there seems to be such a deep dominance of pirates..but every picture i see either shows pirates who have been destroyed by wether events or some sort of Skull and bones of giant sea creatures....soooo

    Im assuming the age of pirates and monsters sort of had this ever going battle where not one thrived...so once we start the game it'll be an golden age of pirates

    I also assume once pirates become to dominant the monsters will slowly return but the NAVY will take a major notice of the sea p*******s called "pirates"

    :P k done

  • Okay so Krakens are usually depicted as being like a giant squid or octopus type creature. While I don't know the specific lore in SoT, I do know a little something about IRL biology. The beak on the skeleton that you posted could possibly be that of a Kraken, but there's one huge glaring problem. Cephalopods don't have skeletons. If we make the leap to say that the SoT biology is analogous to that of our own, then we'd be able to rule out the possibility of that being a Kraken. It'd have to be some sort of large beaked animal other than a Kraken (a bird like you suggested, but no bird of that size would be able to fly, more problems etc). However, that is a large claim to make because, maybe, the SoT world has cephalopod like creatures that do have skeletons. Just some speculation, but I like where this is going. Thoughts?

  • @chosen-predator Where he says 'The Golden Age of piracy has yet to come' is referring back to something Mike hinted at in his post about NPC's in the world of Sea of Thieves here - I remember because I asked the question specifically -

    @mikethemutinous said in The World of Sea of Thieves (and an NPC’s place in it):

    @MikeTheMutinous

    A huge thank you for taking the time out on Easter Sunday to post this. It is and has been one of the longest ongoing topics of speculation on the forums with a huge range of differing ideas and opinions. To be given a glimpse of how Rare sees the world of Sea of Thieves in it's entirety is very exciting.

    I want to post a sort of precis here, largely for my own benefit, but to also make sure that I'm interpreting what you wrote correctly and it might be of help also to others and lead to further discussions.

    So....what I'm understanding is this;

    • Sea of Thieves is a newly discovered 'world' or area full of risk and opportunity - think Indian/Pacific Ocean rather than the Caribbean during the Golden Age.

    • This world is peopled by NPC's who've arrived here, much like us pirates, attracted by the possibilities of gaining fame, wealth and adventure, possibly even safety or freedom from a former life. Some will stay and others will move on and new characters and groups will arrive over time.

    • There are other residents of the world - in the form of mermaids, oceanic inhabitants, skeletons and threats and more, who also provide evidence perhaps of former explorers or treasure hunters.

    NPC's then are there to provide a supporting role for players to play in the way they want to rather than as the 'givers of quests' or prime directors within the world.

    So we might see;

    • Merchants, NPC's representing factions or trading interests, residents of outposts but also those that provide a backdrop and support for players who might want to play as Smugglers, Explorers, Bounty Hunters, Conquerors, Naturalists - and of course all these motivations are fluid depending on the Voyages we choose to follow.

    And all the while, we have the ever present danger and thrill of other players, going about their own business within the world and whom we can choose (or not) to interact with.

    Amiright?

    :)

    Some may very well provide the player with Voyages, based on their importance, with some groups being more permanent while others move on more frequently. That's the aspiration of course. It relates quite closely to the progression work on-going at the moment. As soon as we make good progress, we'll share more on this and the progression systems in general.

    [EDIT] - On the premise of the world, our approach is that the Sea of Thieves itself is a legend, a place that seafarers hear rumours about and seek the clues to plot a course to. Unlike Valhalla, its a real place that exists but its not on any known maps. Only rumours and myths persist, but its enough for some to make the journey...

    When I mentioned that the 'Golden Age' is yet to come to the Sea of Thieves, what I mean is that we don't want players to feel like they've arrived too late and missed the best bits. All that is still potentially to come and players (all of you) will have a hand in that as the Sea of Thieves evolves and gets richer over time. Players will play a role in the lore of the world.

  • @katttruewalker Every time they say that line it sends shivers down my spine... I don't know why, but it has me all excited, just love that line.

  • @musicmee It's just so full of potential, isn't it? Wonderful stuff.

  • @Chosen-Predator
    At first I thought that skull would be the Kraken, but after some little research I found this image of a sea serpent which looks very similar
    alt text

  • @niqsun Something like this would be a more accurate representation of that skeleton model. Sea Serpents that guard treasure like dragons? Sign me the bilge up.

  • @katttruewalker
    Everytime they talk about the Golden Age, I can't help but imagine more life in the world. More NPC's, more occupation, more motivations, leading to something different than outposts. Something bigger than an outpost. But, regardless of what it is, I know it will be grand.

  • @katttruewalker That is pretty awesome so we're basically in the midst of the era happening, it also seems the main arch enemy of a pirate is the dead of former pirates and sea creatures, both in some sort of eternal battle.

    That is until we get our first notice of the navy entering this game which will be a huuuuuuuuuuuuuugeeee hit to the pirates.

  • @chosen-predator If they can ever find a place which exists on no map.....

  • @katttruewalker i still say this whole golden age thing will let us bury our own treasure but i can only hope

  • Arg it be a sea serpent ye land lubers!

  • Go to Krakens Fall during the Beta. You will see countless beaked skeletons. On an island called Krakens Fall. Don't know what else it could be..

  • @psych0-knightro yeah that is why I'm assuming there is more then one kraken - perhaps those aren't matured krakens OR a legendary one that we all know.

    or maybe Krakens were abundant in the sea but now there is only one Kraken left that happens to be the biggest and most powerful one.

  • I know it's tempting to make crazy assumptions based on small hints, especially when we have nothing more on hand, but don't forget the harder you fly, the harder you fall.

    Is that a hint?

    New Sea of Thieves item revealed! Wings you can strap to your back! I can't wait!

  • @icecreammanatee Got me !

  • I think the art team missed the m**o that Cephalopod dose have spins they have shells.
    But if be this true it does give us a guess at the size of the said creature might be in the game.
