Seasonal Events Tranforming the Landscape

  • Just a thought...players have been asking for an ice region for a few years now. Why not have a "cold front" blow in during the winter months and freeze over parts of the map. I can see this adding new game mechanics like having to navigate around icebergs or having to deal with blizzards. The blizzards could act similar to fog and white out the area with a dense snow effect. This would be a cool opportunity to change the layout of popular islands and outposts as well. I know this would be a huge undertaking and probably isn't something that could be added in a short period of time. You could even introduce penguins and other critters into the Sea of Thieves with this change.

Other seasonal event transformations would be great as well. You could have additional spectral activity showing up around the seas during the month of October or something like that.

  • The ice thing gets so much push back but the reality is quite likely it would be organically popular with casual players

Vibe is huge in this game with people and it would bring people around if it had pve to do that was set up with a known successful formula, like how vaults/shipwreck voyages/veils are designed. If it was pretty and warm feeling and had quality pve it would get play.

as far as "not fitting" in the game, I take one look at the costume box and think to myself "huh?"

  • Yes!!! Sounds really cool and would certainly help to bring in some fresh air for seasoned players.

Winter - some snow and less sun would certainly do a trick and if games could add it 20 years ago, I'm sure rare could figure out how.
Spring - The season of bloom, more colorful plants and flowers all over sea of thieves
Summer - maybe the NPCs could have some piratey fans to cool them off, some sort of pinagrog coladas everywhere with little piratey straw umbrellas
Autumn - Well probably Halloween, spider webs and all things spooky.

As you can imagine this is a bit of work for the developers and making sure things dont get bugged, glitch out and probably wont bring them any new players.

But I think this will certainly help the community.

At the same time, I just wish they would not be afraid to play around with the current in game balance. If they are on any social media platform or even here sometimes. It's always PVE only vs PVP only people being loudest and arguing non stop, making this game look like fortnite.

I could tink of a few ideas how to help this out, but basically they need to find a way how to make a let's say Solo sloop engage a full Brig/Galleon instead of running. What incentives they could have for it? Otherwise there might be something coming up in the next update that WILL IMPROVE the situation, however I don't think it will solve it as it might not be organic enough based on the meta gameplay.

  • @wolfmanbush yep, I agree with the costume sentiments. lol

  • Make it a season thing. Players get use to the change and demand it be a permanent change.

No thanks. And yes players would demand the change be a perm, but I’m for one want to keep the SoT as a tropical place

    No cold

  • Ice region! I would love to see the north - east Wilds be frozen over in winter.
Autumn - Ghosts linger and skeletons are abundant in the eastern Devil's Roar. Islands are lightly shrouded.
Summer - The northern Shores of Plenty have huts and settlements on the islands.
Spring - The western Ancient Isles become overgrown with foliage.

I don't think the sea of thieves would have seasons like that. I think tropical areas just have like 2 or 3 seasons and they basically come down to rainy and dry.

I don't think snow fits in with the setting.

Undead skeletons and a giant angry skull face shouting at ships from the sky is rather uncommon sight in the tropics too ^^ just saying.

I would not want to have snow from December all the way until 1st of March. But lets say the Christmas week, that would be cool ^^ Same would go for other seasons. Just my opinion, personally would prefer more content, but things like snow on Christmas was always super cool in games.

  • Why not combine the ice theme with a new world event. Some kind of ancient lord is re-awakened (might be a good use for an adventure if Rare is gonna stick to those?) who posesses ice magic, and for whatever reason he's pi$$ed off and creating winter weather across the whole Sea of Thieves trying to freeze the entire region to death. It would ofcourse involve a cool bossfight, first stage is ship to ship combat (dodging icebergs and sailing in a snowy blizzard), 2nd stage could be on land. The closer to the world event you get, the more it snows and the more icebergs there are. When boss is defeated, all winter weather disappears until he's back.

This way we both get a cool new world event, the entire map becomes an ice region, and no need for Rare to expand the map any more or create instances you gotta portal to.

  • I say it a good bit, but an entire ice zone wouldnt make sense in the tropical theme, but lore wise they could take a massive island and have a sort of event where the island was cursed due to some accident with magical items, causing it to freeze over.

An island covered in a cursed frost, frozen massive spikes of ice that are destroying old structures and the landscape, that could be a good way to bring a frozen area, but an entire ZONE thats just ice would be too massive and out of place for a tropic theme.
