Why is there only skeletons? There's a whole world of nautical mythical creatures that could have been used...

  • Poseidon as a world boss

Sirens, look like mermaids could sing of treasure make unsuspecting players get lured off their ship and then drowned, maybe mix in some real mermaids that do show you treasure to keep you on your toes

    Cthulu

    Leviathan

    Moby D**k

    Giant squid

    Maelatorms

    Davy Jones

    The flying Dutchman

@Rare-Employee your team dropped the ball and they dropped it hard with this title

  • They could at least create ennemy pirate npc on islands

    • Megalodon-sized sharks that bite onto the side of your boat and you need to shoot them off.
    • Giant seabirds that will dive-bomb you, knocking you off the ship.
    • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahuagin that climb on deck and attack you while sailing.
      etc.

I know you're focusing on how it's just skeletons (and that's true), and I agree because variety is always good, but also because the ocean itself should be regarded as the most dangerous thing in the game and it's not at all that way.

The danger in SoT comes 99% from other players and 1% from the kraken (which is super rare to see). If there are no other players in sight, SoT becomes a pleasure cruise simulator very quickly.

Excuse me, sir... I'll have you know Davy Jones and The Flying Dutchman are one and the same thing... The Flying Dutchman is Davy Jones' ship, lol.

Quite strange of you to suggest them separately, you can't really have one without the other. xD

Maybe because of Banjo Tooie and that one boss is Jolly Roger's lagoon

  • while i agree, those are more like world bosses similar to the kraken than skeleton AI.

more AI needs to consist of:

    • a royal navy of some kind. it does not have to be the British, it can be just some made up Kingdom.
    • evil spirits. like the opposite of the old ghost pirate legends.
    • savages/cannibals.

RARE is based in the U.K., if they put savages or cannibals in the game they’d probably face jail time for promoting racism🤔 seriously though, that’s a thing there now! I agree that only skeletons and a disembodied kraken are garbage content for players to battle☹️

  • @therealdestian I completely agree, I'd like to see a change to storms in that regard. Make them bigger and neigh unavoidable. Make them take up a huge chunk of the map, not just one or two islands and the surrounding area. Make a storm encompass a region. Add tidal waves, add whirlpools, waterspouts, cyclones etc. Some of the most engrossing sailing comes in navigating a storm. Yet too often is my boat simply set in the direction i need it to, and i just hang out waiting for it to get to the island as i look for ships or get drunk on grog for the 100th time out of sheer boredom.

  • I believe hostile mermaids have been discovered via several methods. Including the cave paintings on some of the islands depicting two different types of merfolk, one being the helpful creatures that are in-game right now.

There's also a monster crab that appears in island cave-paintings. That'll probably be added later.

There has also been teaser footage somewhere of a ghost ship that materializes every now and then.

But, Sea Serpents and a Megalodon I agree.

    That's all great news.

The biggest problem I have with SoT right now is that, if other players in the instance with you don't feel like PvPing (or you never see them), the game becomes an utter snooze.

  • Rare should stand by some of their philosophies with this game but one they definitely need to let go of is "no NPC ships"

I totally get the argument of seeing sails and knowing that's a player, but that has the other effect of, you see sails, and you're like "that's a player, i'll just head the other way"

I want to see sails and be like "that could either be pirates, or it could be a skeleton crew full of plunder" and then i'm taking that emergent risk to get a reward.

plus, what Pirate game would be complete without a Navy? the Merchant Alliance has mentioned "reporting me to the authorities" but there is none.. we're in a region where there's no form of law enforcement and the begs the question if you're really a pirate when there's nobody to tell you what you're doing is wrong..

  • @splatulated Moby D**k would be mint

See what you did, but Moby D**k is white

  • -Other AI controlled pirates from varying factions
    -Tribal pygmies
-Shark People (look like sharks, walk like people)

Maybe they'll add the East India Trading Company or some equivalent in a later patch, but there does need to be something else out there on the seas that we can plunder or worry about attacking us.

Also, here's the brief clip of the ghost ship:
    https://youtu.be/ZAIhlMH4ztY?t=33m2s

I hope they add this at some point soon. The ocean needs more dangers, for sure...

  • So true if there where other ships to plunder that would go along way.

So cool seeing a ship of skeletons boarding it and taking there loot.

  • It has been confirmed that they will be adding more of this type of thing at a later date. They have definitely got more sea monsters at least planned.

The game is just out and they are going to keep supporting it. Content is definitely coming. Be patient!

  • Davy Jones? who summoned me?

  • Honestly I think it was just a money thing. Cutting corners to save resources. The skeletons are already used for player models, you can see them briefly when a player is just logging in before it loads all their clothing and stuff.

  • @hot-juicy-pie I think Rare simply ran out of time with Microsoft breathing down their necks to do everything they wanted to, either that or they just spent too much time on certain systems, prototyping things and not using their time efficiently. The latter sounds more right by the day, considering this game was in development for 4 years.

It's clear they had big plans for the game judging by the Art Book and went through many ideas, who knows how much of that might still make it into the game.

    Davy Jones? who summoned me?

    Show me the key...

  • They were busy creating the 4 sails icons. You're asking too much! /s
I'm sure they had a lot of ideas but it seems like their workflow is jeopardized by someone in charge being too picky. That's why probably very few designs of anything made it through.

  • @mad-mordechai Completely agree Rare seem to be really bad at time management and general planning and sticking to a scheduled and this I think lead to them having to release before the game was ready this game needed another year.

My concern now is its going to be a long time before this game is up to scratch and the damage is already done now, even more concerned by the fact they have loose plans for the next few months and are only just now actually planning what they will be doing outside of micro transactions.

My other concern is if you watch the interview with IGN last week he lets slip that the whole Rare studio will no longer be working on this title and it will be a smaller team......

if thats true, im never buying a game produced in the UK again. What a bunch of lazy j******s.

  • @meingott77 if you go read all the posts by the ex employee who left last year he basically said they had no clear direction nobody really had a clue as to what the game was going to be they had a basic idea but that was it so they all kinda worked h*****n just making things look and work as well as they could while waiting to get a better sense of what the game was trying to be and well some people will say he is an ex employee talking rubbish but the if you take emotion out and look at the game what he is saying shows....

  • @mysticdragon297 The issue with adding cannibals and savages could be kinda like racial backlash because of how the world is today, but yeah I would be down for a royal navy and evil spirits

  • Moby D**k is a proper name and does not/ should not be censored.

  • @mad-mordechai Microsoft literally let Rare create exactly what the wanted and didn’t breathe down their neck. They even delayed the game. If anything, someone should have been breathing down their neck. Maybe then we would see more than one enemy type and a few cosmetics in four years.

  • Davy Jones yes!

  • @pilks4k Really? Wow

  • @corrupt-fellow yep google sea of thieves ex rare employee

  • @personalc0ffee said in Why is there only skeletons? There's a whole world of nautical mythical creatures that could have been used...:

@blam320 Don't talk about contents of or data mining. Violation of forum rules and Xbox ToS.

Fine. It's always those little details that get you.

  • There could have been be hostile native people living on the biggest islands : head shrinkers as cannibals, or territorial small settlements of colonists and well defended garrisons of soldiers trying to control commercial routes.

But even in the future I highly doubt any of those would make it into the game which does lack of both ambition as vision.
