TPM and Windows Just Got My Friend Banned...

  • I know this is mostly going to go no where, but I have to at least post about it because I think its something either Rare needs to state publicly or discuss the concerns of. I am all for the scorched earth approach they are taking to cheaters. I am not a fan of the root level access anti-cheat that was chosen, but I will deal with it for the sake of playing the game. Though after this weekend, I maybe switching to my PS5 copy permenantly...

My friend got a windows update last week. Initially all seemed well and going into the weekend we chose to do the community events to grab all the cosmetics. We did that goal, no issues. Got our seven cakes and made a little money (130Kish, on community weekend that is pennies haha). That is when disaster struck... I got off to switch games and he decided he wanted to do a bit of solo sloop hourglass grind. He was really low level ( around 27 I think) and was jumping on to do roll to win and a bit of loss farming as he does not like solo sloop combat. He did a few, but then started getting errors in the xbox app. This caused him to restart and continue to have issues with the app. He had noted that this was not the first time since that windows update I mentioned before.

We then spent an hour debugging his issues and trying to figure out what was going on with his rig. This resulted in a Windows Restore, turning TPM off and back on the PC. Big hassle, but we were using the Xbox app as our check point. Once corrected though, he jumped into Sea of Thieves only to be prompted with a Redbeard error... Stunned and confused my friend openned a support ticket to get the normal cookie cutter response of scorched earth with little info. Understandable but very very frustrating...

It is well understood the approach they are taking...However, they know there are going to be stray bullets now that the war on cheaters has begun. It is both disheartening and massively discouraging to watch this whole event unfold. Without and information from what actually triggered the ban... we have no idea what not to do in the future. The obvious response is "Don't Cheat Duuuuurrrrr", but writing this story... there was no cheating. This was root level anti-cheat being suspicious of TPM/Windows issues and rightfully flagging something. Somehting screwed up on Windows end and resulted in a Restore point used to correct it. The user did nothing wrong here... yet here they lose an account with 500+ hours and money tied into ancient coin... I have a 2000 hour plus account wiht hundreds in the game... This just makes me want to only play console to avoid this...

So I guess where this is coming from is, Hey Rare do you have a response to those who get caught in the crossfire? Any tips or help for those of us still active?

For others, becareful out there. Any tips for me to recover my friends want to play the game after being forced to start over? Luckily Sea of Thieves is sandbox and we can still do all new stuff together... jsut sucks to lose the progress and money spent.

  • @blueblazingdemo unfortunately there’s nothing that can be said or done here. I know it’s what you already know but support are the only people you can talk to about it. I’m sorry :(

  • @blueblazingdemo have them send another support ticket. Support can be hit or miss with how willing someone is to listen to your side, but support is the only one who can help. So I’d try again, very politely, until you get a more helpful response.

  • Something that some times helps at times is reaching out to partners who are more community oriented as a sort of ambassador to speak with rare, some one like phuzzy or rocket are both good people to reach out to if you need an actual voice about an issue that shouldnt have happened like this. They have helped a few people in the past with issues that support wasnt any use with.
