Before we face Rathbone in his lair, using a spyglass you can clearly see him placing a hand on his head, something is obviously bothering him and thanks to a tweet from SoT, they explain the gems in his eyes are Veil Stones that allow him to peer into other worlds and their treasures besides the Sea of Thieves. Unfortunately, he is not able to acquire them, being so far from his reach, it slowly drove him mad, despite having all the gold he earned for himself, he still wanted more but could not leave, what with being trapped in Tribute Peak, surrounded by the Shroud and all.
Currently now, only one jewel in his skull is now being used as a staff by the Dark Brethren for their own personal gain, being able to traverse between the realms of the living and the dead at ease. But I wonder, where is the OTHER stone that was replaced by coral in his other eye?
