  • @shoddyagenda881 literally every game everywhere has micro transactions.

  • "Please don't support the company so that it may have operating capital to continue to improve the game."

You honestly think a game company is able to thrive off box sales alone?

  • @shadowstrider-7 Doesnt mean the should infect sea of thieves. Microtransactions are bad enough but in a game like sea of thieves it would be horrible

  • @shoddyagenda881 For some reason I heard this post from my bedroom.

On a serious note, they have promised that microtransactions will not give any progression. There will be no Pay 2 Win. I wouldn't mind microtransactions so much for special cosmetics - provided I can get cool cosmetics from playing as well. Not all microtransactions are EA-level evil. :)

  • @krawnnic as stated by so many founders this isn't a MMO so no 60.00 should be enough, it has been for many gamss before this one. If the game was 20.00 sure I'm fine with that. No sub fee because it's not a classic MMO.

  • @madame-ching aside from the common theme on these boards of "founders". I don't need a silly title on the side of my forum name to actually have a business sense. 60$ for a title that doesn't require updating regularly like a single player game but this is an online game. It will require a dedicated staff and the dependency of capital will always be apart of a company. If you want to solely rely on box sales then you are stating that you are ok with the company immediately downsizing after release and running a skeleton crew to barely maintain the systems operational. Improvements and additional content will be small and far between.

Personally for me I'd prefer the company to thrive and have a staff that is flourishing and the ability to retain creative control over the title to maximize the capability of the game. That's my opinion and it's ok if we disagree but I assure you that relying on box sales alone will have a negative side to it as will microtransactions. However, I prefer to let nooblet123 to have his shiny clothing in return for a healthy operating company that can produce content regularly and at a high value.

  • @krawnnic First, they are selling on Xbox as well as PC, and the game costs $60. Not $30, not $40, $60. So yes, I expect them to make the money they need from sales. If not, then that means it wasn't a good enough game to stand on its own anyways. Microtransactions that allow the player to buy gold would make the action of completing quests to earn gold, i.e. playing the game, feel pointless. If this was a free to play game or maybe a $30 game then yeah, microtransactions would be more acceptable. I don't want microtransactions in my $60 game.

  • @shoddyagenda881 No need for name-calling, mate. There is the code and all. The progression is more horizontal than vertical so don't worry if someone bought a fancy outfit. Also I believe Rare care about fairness. :) Fair winds, mate.

@Ultra-Pwnzor Games have been $60 for a while now. Microtransactions are a new way to help companies keep up with falling sales. Seeing as Rare has a proven track record, and they have a plan to keep this game updated through 2019, I'd trust them. The microtransactions will be cosmetic. Don't worry. :D

  • @ultra-pwnzor you don't have to buy anything....no one is forcing you to. any microtransactions will give you no advantage over others, therefore there is no reason to buy anything unless you want to

  • @whenkoalasattak Sea of thieves needs diagonal progression

  • $60 for the base game should be more than sufficient to carry the game post-launch for a year or two, but what then? Any 'online only' game will need income to stay alive and I don't know about you, but I'd rather buy cosmetics to support a game that I care about than a season pass with false promises and things that are locked behind a paywall. Any gaming company that wishes to have their game enjoyed for years to come has adopted either a subscription-based fee, or a cosmetic-only DLC.

  • @Ultra-Pwnzor having previous experience in the gaming industry; I respectfully disagree. The gaming market in itself has proven that micro-transactions are a huge success and has benefited even the largest companies in ways that box sales couldn't have done in the past. I'm curious however why you guys are actually against the transactions? They aren't mandatory nor do they hold any form of power in the game. What is the actual concern? If all of the items purchasable from the shop are able to be obtained through gameplay then why does it matter? A "proper" shop doesn't bring any detriment to the players but only bolsters the future of the company designing the game that you all so passionately want to succeed.

  • @shoddyagenda881 I believe this is where you and I disagree. But you're free to have your opinion. :) Have a nice day.

  • @shoddyagenda881 AGREED! Microtransactions are a TERRIBLE and disgusting practice... when abused... i think cosmetics is perfectly fine but progression is not ok. People seem to think that they need the money to continue operations on the game? what the hell... this is a fairly new practice that is pure cash grab. EA is the poster child for microtransactions and CD Projekt Red is the anti-microtransaction. Cosmetics = OK in my book. Progression = HELL NAW... anyway... heres to hoping microsoft/rare arent gonna go to the dark side

  • If there were any, which i doubt there will be, it would not have anything to do with progression. Even the things you are allowed to buy with in game currency are purely cosmetic. If they were to create progression items that would cost real money, it would undermine their entire agenda.

  • @krawnnic no you are wrong, micro transactions will kill the game. Once word spreads out that there are microtransactions in a game with minimal progression no one is gonna buy it.

  • @shoddyagenda881 only if people assume 'microtransactions means winning'

you're doom and gloom is going to fall on deaf ears shoddy. there are plenty of massive titles with 0 progression and micro transactions flourishing. We do not have the full game nor do we know the full detail of all the progression type systems that are in the game. Power is the only thing that has been confirmed won't be a progression type but there are many different systems that could be implemented into the game that we simply do not have at our discretion at the moment.

Personally the beta was promising enough for me to be hooked and willing to spend my money to support these guys. The foundation of this game is extremely solid and I have a HARD time believing the sheer genius level implementation put into the foundation doesn't have spectacular features right around the corner.

  • @shoddyagenda881 l**o you're funny man. Clearly you don't understand how things work in the real world. I know this might be hard for you to understand but things, like servers for example, cost money. There is nothing wrong with micro transactions that are strictly cosmetic. If I want to buy a clothing item for myself then why not. Nobody is making you do it. So why don't you calm down and go complain somewhere else. This is a great game and it doesn't need you here complaining about everything. Go play something else if it bothers you so much ;)

  • Honestly people need to calm down. Rare has stated many times that gameplay elements will not be pay 2 win. A game I like using as an example is titanfall 2 they do micro transactions just right. And a game like sea of thieves doesn't need diagonal progression if you need to no life a game just to be better than someone else is just stupid. I hate stats in game I think everyone at the same level is perfect so that the thing that determines true skill is skill and not because you played the game a million hours (elder scrolls online) and you have a character that just wrecks everyone else. If they decide to make DLC maps or something like they paid for I don't care as long as the content is worth the price cause than I wouldn't care supporting future additions to the game.

  • In reality nobody should respond to this post. Don't give it any popularity. This kid has no clue what hes talking about and if he doesn't want to play/support the game that's on him. We don't need him here if hes gonna go in with his attitude

  • @gvigs16 true I agree. Also to the guy who said this game won't survive, its just like pubg has no progression besides cosmetics and it's doing find. Sea of thieves is basically the same except that you can do more in sea of thieves. Just add a battle royal game mode and boom it surpasses pubg which I do believe I play both this and pubg and I'm in the group that thinks this game will be the next pubg in terms of popularity.

  • I mean... If you willingly buy games with microtransactions then you've been scammed. So, yea, I don't want microtransactions in SoT thank you.

  • @dr-farce As long as they don't effect game play I'm find with it no one is holding a gun to ur head and telling you to buy a hat or pants.

  • @ods7-117 I like games like I like all media art. If it's not helping the art then it's not appropriate for it to be included imo. That's just how I feel about it, and microtransactions usually rely mostly on whale gamers and that sort of tells me the game isn't designed for gamers like me but rather has mechanics dedicated to those that will be willing to pay $ (regardless of what in game things they get).

I'm one of those guys that won't buy a Blu Ray if it has unskipible trailers. I'm a traditionalist and I don't do "games as a service" stuff, I'm a product man. Call me old fashioned ;)

  • @krawnnic I can see your point about micro-transactions helping a lot of companies, and I agree that in most cases purely cosmetic micro-transactions are a good thing. Sea of Thieves, however, I believe to be a more special case. Correct me if i'm wrong, but as far as we know the point of playing the game falls down to two core elements. Increase your reputation with trading companies and to gain cosmetics because "Ultimately, every player is on their own personal journey to build a reputation, and become pirate legend. Part of this journey, will be how you present yourself to other pirates..."(citation). I am aware reputation is out of reach of the micro-transactions, but cosmetics (how you present yourself to other pirates) seems to be such a key reason/motivation for playing this particular game. Want to do a voyage, quest, escort some loot, attack other pirates? Sure, but why? To get gold to buy cosmetics with. Don't get me wrong, I already pre-orederd this game and loved playing the beta, but for me a huge part of playing was the satisfaction of looking more classy than other players.

  • @shoddyagenda881

I really don't mind if they do charge... but they should do real expansion packs like back in the 90's! Not just an outfit or emote.

Research Expansion Packs and their costs and you'll see the best thing ever made!! You'll spit on DLC going forward.

  • Moreover, for me personally the satisfaction of the cosmetic equipment would be removed if i payed for it and didn't earn it. I like the respect/feeling of superiority you get if the high end cosmetic gear you have can only be earned, not bought. I would look at the players with purchased cosmetics and think "they must not be good enough to get it fair and square, so they had to buy it", and not respect them. I would think other players would not respect me for wearing it either. Thus, at least for me, defeating the purpose of the cosmetic gear.

Valid points, however that is the type of feedback that needs to be iterated. Not a line drawn in the sand that no micro transactions whatsoever. A shop can be handled a magnitude of different ways and excluding the rarest and best looking items is one of those ways. Like i stated previously I don't expect such a well thought out and implemented game somehow will just magically turn maniacal and throw away their player base for capital to serve the playerbase that they ran off. Have a bit of faith and state what you would like out of a store because the facts that I do have in hand is that micro transactions done properly are a huge helping hand to companies. We do not have the details of their shop nor do we have all of the details of the systems of the full game.

  • @vipeness the problem with expansion packs now is that it would split the community behind a paywall. Cosmetic DLC plans allow the developers to keep the community playing together, while still making money.

  • @ods7-117 Battle Royales are trash. So is pubg

  • @shoddyagenda881 but u don't need to be blind to see that it works and is successful and that there is a market for it.
